Honestly, I had never heard of Kangaroo Island before I was sent there to work with a VIP group. Now, I can’t wait to get the word out about Kangaroo Island, and specifically the Southern Ocean Lodge.
Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia (Tasmania and Melville hold #1 and #2). The island got its name from the English explorer Matthew Flinders who, after many days at sea, feasted on Kangaroo upon landing on the island’s shore. Luckily, that trend didn’t stick, and the grey kangaroo’s are thriving.

The Southern Ocean Lodge is nothing short of amazing from the service to accommodation – it’s all-outstanding. The eco-friendly lodge is perched unobtrusively on a cliff top overlooking the Southern Ocean. All 21 rooms are ocean facing and have an unobstructed view of the ocean.
No luxury lodge would be complete without a spa and the Southern Spa really delivers. Located in a separate building, the luxurious spa features several treatment rooms, a steam room and a chill lounge. They also use Kangaroo Island’s own natural products. These same products are amenities in the guest rooms and they are gorgeous.
Although it has a very sophisticated and relaxed vibe, the Southern Ocean Lodge welcomes families. In addition to all the outdoor activities, there are board games and, since most of the rooms do not have TVs, the Lodge has a separate lounge with a large television and comfortable sofas. The Ocean Premium room is a two-bedroom suite that is perfect for families.
Allison and John, lodge managers, are extremely hospitable and run a tight ship. The service is friendly and unobtrusive lending to a very homey and comfortable atmosphere.
